OUIK is a unique project focused on the sustainable utilization of biodiversity and ecosystem services. It is strongly supported by the local governments of Ishikawa prefecture and the city of Kanazawa in Japan. OUIK provides local and regional input into the sustainable development and international cooperation efforts of UNU, in collaboration with other organizations including UN agencies, academic institutes and local partners.

OUIK also aims at developing communication and networks with local stakeholders through public outreach and capacity building, while sharing information about international trends. OUIK builds capacity and strengthens its programmes by providing opportunities for postdoctoral fellows from developing countries to contribute to its research activities.

The research activities of the project are focused on three areas: Satoyama and Satoumi (SAS), Sustainable Primary Industries (SPI), and Cities and Biodiversity (CAB).
