Synopsis

By taking account of the constraints experienced by cotton farmers, the role of cotton in the farming system and the temporal dynamics of the pest complex, a rational, systems approach was developed to improve IPM decision making for irrigated cotton in northern India. The emphasis was on sustainable management of insecticide-resistant pests while maintaining or enhancing farmer incomes and improving the environmental impact of cotton growing in the Punjab. A systems approach was adopted to help provide a rational solution to the pest management decisions faced by farmers growing irrigated cotton.
