[ScienceDirect] New technologies are vital to increasing agricultural productivity and farmers’ income (Duflo et al., 2011, Asfaw et al., 2012, Shiferaw et al., 2014, Ogundari and Bolarinwa, 2018, Simtowe et al., 2019, Martey et al., 2020). Despite this, the adoption of new farming technologies remains consistently low in many developing countries (Bergoeing et al., 2010, Takahashi et al., 2020). Diffusion of new technologies remains a challenge because of farmers’ limited access to credit, the risks involved in agriculture, lack of farmers’ knowledge and proficiency, and difficulties with access to accurate and timely information dissemination (Katengeza et al., 2019, Simtowe et al., 2019, Martey et al., 2020).
