This progress report presents an overview of major transport research themes and gaps from sub-Saharan Africa from a social science perspective. It reviews the causes and effects of the current broad pattern of gender disparity in transport access and uses in Africa, paying particular attention to cultural constraints on women’s travel, the impacts of poor transport on women’s health, and women’s access to intermediate means of transport.
