ABSTRACT

This GIS study shows that the development of rice paddies in Sierra Leone has led to fewer forest fires. Farmer groups who developed rice paddies under the IFAD-supported Smallholder Commercialization Programme have shifted from slash-and-burn cultivation to rice cultivation in inland swamps because the latter produces higher yields. This shift is visible in remote sensing imagery.
